
The Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) has issued a directive reminding the shipping community that shippers should not bear the costs associated with delays at Ghana’s ports caused by system failures or equipment breakdowns. This follows reports of significant delays in the delivery and evacuation of containers at the Port of Tema, largely attributed to recurring scanner breakdowns at the MPS Terminal 3 and intermittent glitches in the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS). The GSA in a statement noted such costs are unjustified and should not be imposed on shippers.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has prohibited its officers from engaging in or being involved in clearing and forwarding of goods at ports and border posts. This decision was one of the outcomes of the 2024 Comptroller-General of Customs Conference held in Abuja from November 12 to 15. Themed “Engaging Traditional and New Partners With Purpose,” the conference was declared open by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and aligned with the World Customs Organization’s focus on fostering partnerships to achieve customs goals.

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has reported a total of 162 boat accidents over the past decade, resulting in 229 fatalities during that period. In addition, 745 individuals were rescued from marine accidents across the state. A detailed statistical report provided to Vanguard analyzed the trends in accident rates, death tolls, and rescue operations over the past ten years, shedding light on variations and potential contributing factors. In 2014, LASWA recorded 18 accidents, 32 deaths, and 24 rescues. In contrast, the following year saw an increase to 19 accidents, 42 deaths, and 35 rescues. The death rate dropped significantly in 2016, with 10 fatalities, 10 accidents, and 14 rescues, compared to 2017, which saw only four rescues, 18 deaths, and six accidents.

The Zone A Operation Whirlwind Unit of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in Lagos recently intercepted smugglers attempting to transport over 10,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) concealed in sacks. In a statement, the Commander of Operation Whirlwind, Assistant Comptroller of Customs, Mahmood Bello, disclosed that the operation took place on New Year’s Eve. Customs operatives conducted surveillance along the waterside in Badagry, where they intercepted 61 sacks and seven jerry cans of PMS loaded in a large canoe headed for the Benin Republic.

The management of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has appointed Mr Sylvester Othuke Egede as the substantive port manager of the Tin-Can Island Port Complex (TCIPC). According to a statement signed by the Port Spokesman, Sola Adesanwo, the new Port Manager succeeds Akin Leoso, who served in an acting capacity for two months (November and December 2023) since the exit of Jubril Buba, the former Port Manager who exited the NPA on November 2, 2023.
