The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has lamented the alarming neglect of safety standards and protocols in seaports, terminals, jetties, and oil platforms across Nigeria, declaring a state of emergency over the situation. The Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Badagry, Lagos, has handed over six suspected smugglers and 126 bags of foreign parboiled rice to the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS). According to Linus Osuman, the Commanding Officer of the base, the suspects were intercepted on December 27 at Akere Creek in Badagry while transporting the contraband using three fibre boats. “Our operation was based on an intelligence report about bags of rice being smuggled into the Akere community. Acting swiftly, we deployed our quick response team to the location. This led to the seizure of 126 bags of foreign rice and the arrest of six suspects. Searches of nearby communities yielded no further contraband or arrests,” Osuman explained during the handover.

China Development Bank has released a $254.76 million loan to Nigeria for a railway project linking the two northern states of Kano and Kaduna, the bank said, ahead of a visit by China’s top diplomat this week. As part of his annual New Year tour of Africa, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi will arrive in Nigeria and meet President Bola Tinubu and senior government officials, Nigeria’s foreign affairs ministry said. China Development Bank said in a statement on its website that the loan would provide financial support for the smooth progress of the 203-kilometre (126-mile) standard-gauge railway.
