Port Health Service Partners NPA, Police On Cleaner Environment

The Port Health Services (PHS) partnered the Nigeria Police, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and Apapa Local Government to sensitise port users on the benefits of cleaning environment. Mr Adeniyi Ogungbayi, the Officer in Charge, PHS, NPA, Apapa, at the sensitisation programme said the event was organised to teach port users the need to keep their environment clean. “If you drive all around Apapa, you will see the rate streets are littered with dirt and this is unacceptable. “The government places a big responsibility on the PHS to play a key role in the sanitation of the environment and the maintenance of the port.

NPA expands hinterland connectivity with direct link

To facilitate Port-Hinterland connectivity and create pathways for Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs), the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), said it planned to link the Export Processing Terminals (EPTs), with the Domestic Export Warehouse (DEW).This was disclosed by the managing director of NPA, Dr Abubakar Dantsoho, at the 2024 Lagos International Trade Fair, titled, ‘Connecting Businesses, Creating Value, in Lagos. According to the NPA boss, the EPTs are to be linked with Domestic Export Warehouses (DEWs) in synergy with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) and relevant partners.

Abuja MoU Says Africa Needs 100 More Ships, Stronger Ports, Aligned Policies for AfCFTA

Secretary General of the Abuja Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Port State Control, otherwise called Abuja MOU; Captain Sunday Umoren has called for immediate investment in Africa’s port infrastructure and shipping fleet to meet the projected surge in trade demand under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). This is even as he stressed the need for Africa to acquire at least 100 additional vessels to effectively support the AfCFTA initiative. Speaking at the National Association of Masters Mariners (NAMM) 3rd Quarterly Paper Presentation in Lagos over the weekend, Umoren emphasized that without significant upgrades, Africa risks missing out on the full economic potential of AfCFTA.

Lekki Port Launches COSCO Shipping, ONE, ZIM Line Services

In what could be described as a major boost to the Nigerian maritime sector and international trade, the management of Lekki Port LFTZ Enterprise Limited (LPLEL), Lekki Freeport Terminal, and the Lagos Free Zone have launched the COSCO, ONE (Ocean Network Express), and ZIM alliance services at Lekki Deep Sea Port. The launch of the services was signaled by the arrival of the E A Centaurus at Lekki Deep Sea Port on November 8, 2024. The E A Centaurus, with an overall length of 277m and a container handling capacity of 7,000 TEU, is also the largest COSCO vessel to call Nigeria. It docked at the port at about 10:30 a.m.

Okonjo-Iweala Urges FG to Streamline Border Agencies, Enhance Customs Reforms for Trade Facilitation

Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), has called on Nigeria’s Federal Government to reduce the number of agencies stationed at its borders as part of comprehensive reforms needed in the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS). Speaking virtually at the 2024 Comptroller General of Customs Conference in Abuja, she emphasised that this measure is essential to improve trade facilitation and boost revenue. According to Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria has an unusually high number of government agencies at its borders compared to other countries, creating inefficiencies that hamper trade.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has hit its 2024 revenue target of N5.1 trillion, its Comptroller-General, Adewale Adeniyi, has said. Adeniyi made the disclosure in Abuja at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Comptroller General Conference (CGC), tagged ‘NCS: Engaging Traditional and New Partners with Purposes’. “I am pleased to announce that on the 12 November 2024, at exactly ten minutes past one, the NCS hit its 2024 revenue target of NGN 5.07 trillion, with more than a month remaining in the fiscal year. “This exceptional performance projected to exceed our target by at least 10 per cent validates our partnership-driven approach to revenue collection and trade facilitation.
