NPA Enforces Holding Bay Requirement For Shipping Companies

Following a stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has mandated all shipping companies operating in Nigeria to establish holding bays for empty containers and to oversee their coordinated return to the ports. A notice from the Truck Transit Parks Limited, NPA’s partner for the management of truck movements in and out of the ports, outlines this requirement as part of broader measures to ease congestion at the port terminals and along the port corridor. According to the notice, the NPA is enforcing a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the return of empty containers.

Barge Operators Move 4 Million TEUs in 5 Years, Demand Policy Reforms to Boost Sector

The President of the Barge Operators Association of Nigeria (BOAN); Mr Olubunmi Olumekun, has highlighted the significant strides made by the association since its inception in 2019, while calling for urgent policy reforms to address challenges facing the industry. In a chat with our correspondent, Olumekun revealed that members of the association have facilitated the movement of approximately 4 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) of cargo across Nigeria’s waterways. These he said include imports, exports, and other cargo entries, positioning barge operations as a critical component of the nation’s maritime logistics.

NIMASA Refutes Allegations of Missing Cabotage Vessel Financing Funds

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has said that funds accrued under the Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund (CVFF) are intact and securely held with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) under the Single Treasury Account (TSA). This clarification follows a misleading publication alleging that funds have disappeared from the CVFF account. The claim of missing funds is both false and misleading, NIMASA said in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Osagie Edward. “For the record, the CVFF remains securely held in NIMASA’s account at the CBN, with no evidence of any disappearance or irregular transactions as alleged.

Nigeria signs Customs Mutual Administrative Agreement with India

In a significant move to enhance bilateral relations, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has signed a Customs Mutual Administrative Agreement (CMAA) with its Indian counterpart. The signing ceremony took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja and coincided with the state visit of India’s Prime Minister to Nigeria on November 17, 2024. The Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, who represented Nigeria at the event, said the agreement marks the culmination of negotiations that began in 2016. Adeniyi described the agreement as a landmark development aimed at strengthening collaboration between the customs administrations of both nations.

Maritime Governance: Oyetola Deposits Three Accession Instrument At IMO

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola, has deposited three Instruments of Accession to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Convention which was signed by President Bola Tinubu. The Head, Public Relation Unit of the Nigerian Maritime Adminstration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Edward Osagie, said this in a statement in Lagos. Osagie said that the event took place at the headquarters of the IMO in London, which acts as the repository for these conventions. He said that the move came few weeks after Nigeria declared its intention to contest election for a seat on the IMO Council.
