There can be no better time than now for the take-off of the National Single Window initiative aimed at eliminating bureaucratic delays in export and import processes to boost trade efficiency and enhance economic growth. This was the consensus of stakeholders and industry experts at the opening of a three-day workshop on the presidential initiative called the National Single Window project launched by President Bola Tinubu in April 2024. Single Window: FG Targets 25% Reduction in Port Operation Cost

The Federal Government has stated plans to implement the National Single Window (NSW) to reduce the cost of doing business in Nigerian ports by at least 25 per cent. The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, disclosed this at a stakeholders’ forum on the establishment of the NSW in Lagos. He said that the implementation of NSW could enhance efficiency, therefore reducing these costs by at least 25 per cent. The News Agency of Nigerian (NAN report that the World Bank had said that the cost of doing business at Nigerian ports could be up to 40 per cent.

Customs Grant Traders 30 Days Free Clearance For Over Time Cargoes

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has introduced new guidelines limiting the duration of cargo stay at ports nationwide to a maximum of 30 days. In a statement signed by the agency’s spokesman, Assistant Comptroller of Customs Mr. Abdullahi Maiwada, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) announced the implementation of new guidelines regulating the dwell time for import and export consignments at port terminals. The measures aim to enhance trade facilitation, in line with the Federal Government’s Ease of Doing Business initiatives. According to Mr. Maiwada, the new guidelines are designed to address port congestion, streamline clearance processes, and minimize disputes arising from the disposal of overtime cargo.

NPA Revises Entry Requirements for Trucks into Ports

To enhance efficiency and security at the nation’s ports in Lagos, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has announced changes to truck entry protocols, effective February 3, 2025. Starting next month, manual presentation of number plates and Minimum Safety Standards (MSS) stickers at port gates will no longer be allowed. In a notice issued by Truck Transit Parks Limited, NPA’s technical partner for traffic management, the agency emphasized the transition to automated verification as the sole method for entry. In the notice titled ‘Updates on Port Entry Requirements for All Truck Categories’, it was also stated that all trucks approaching the port must have their number plates riveted/fastened to the truck in compliance with regulatory requirements.

APM Terminals to Build Deep Seaport, Dry Port in Ogun State

In a major step towards transforming Ogun State into a logistics and trade hub, the Ministry of Transportation has presented two master plan layouts for the development of Dry and Deepsea ports to APM Terminals Management. The Commissioner in the Ministry, Olugbenga Dairo, during the presentation in Abeokuta, unveiled the government’s plans to integrate railway routes and other transportation networks for seamless movement of goods and services. “The project is also set to feature manufacturing zones and processing facilities to support agricultural exports and reduce the losses of farm products, positioning the state as a prime destination for trade and industry,” he said.
