Customs Launches AEO Programme To Boost Trade, Reduce Business Cost

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has officially launched its Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) programme, a significant milestone in its efforts to modernize trade facilitation, ease cost of doing business and enhance supply chain security. The launch follows a successful pilot phase in April 2024 involving six companies. Speaking at the launch of the event which held in Lagos, Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi announced that the AEO registration portal would open on February 17 for eligible companies. He highlighted the remarkable success of the pilot phase, noticing that collective trade value of the six participating companies increased from N185.8 billion in 2023 to N563.8 billion in 2024.

The Federal Government has unveiled plans to build eight new deep seaports across the country as part of its strategy to position Nigeria as a leading maritime hub in Africa. The proposed deep seaports will be located in Badagry, Ilaje, Olokola, Agge, Ibaka, Burutu, Snake Island, and Bakassi. According to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, these projects are expected to enhance

trade, reduce congestion at existing ports, and attract foreign investments into Nigeria’s blue economy. Oyetola, made this announcement recently during an interactive session with the Nigerian Guild of Editors, emphasising the economic and job creation potential of the maritime sector.

The newly appointed Nigeria Customs Area Controller of the Oil and Gas Free Trade Zone, OGFTZ Command, Onne, Rivers State, Comptroller Aliyu Alkali, has reassured stakeholders of his commitment to enhancing trade facilitation and ensuring regulatory compliance within the zone. During a familiarisation

meeting at the Oil and Gas Free Zone Authority in Onne, Alkali engaged with key stakeholders, including government agencies, enterprises, shipping companies, and trade associations, emphasising the importance of strict adherence to trade

regulations. Alkali urged all freight forwarders and enterprises operating in the OGFTZ to perfect their single goods declaration on pre-release approval within 14 days of transaction to maintain accurate records and ensure a seamless business

environment.

As Nigeria prepares for the implementation of the National Single Window (NSW), the Director of the NSW Project, Mr. Tola Fakolade has assured freight forwarders that the system is designed to enhance their operations rather than replace them,

emphasizing that technology will streamline processes while maintaining the crucial role of experienced professionals. Speaking at a stakeholders’ forum with members of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) at the association headquarters in Lagos, Fakolade emphasised that technology is transforming every profession, but it does not eliminate the need for expertise and experience.

Cargo Tracking Note To Combat Smuggling, Boost Security— NSC

The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has emphasised that its new International Cargo Tracking Note (ICTN) will play a crucial role in safeguarding Nigeria from drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and other contraband that fuel insecurity. Executive Secretary of the council, Dr Pious Akutah, said this in a statement issued by the Head of Public Relations, Mrs Rebecca Adamu, in Lagos. The ICTN is a proposal by NSC to ensure the traceability of goods across international borders. It assigns a unique identification number to each shipment and therefore a tool to enhance trade globally. Akutah said that the council decried the recent upsurge in arms and drug importation and called for total support by all.
